Newark school board hires new superintendent

NEWARK -- The school board formally has approved hiring Dave Marken as Newark's superintendent of schools, giving the former Dublin official a three-year contract with an annual salary of $190,000. Janis Duran, who served as Newark's interim superintendent the past two weeks, said she immediately will step down and serve as a district consultant.Duran, who has remained as Hayward schools' interim superintendent, will not be paid for the work she recently performed for Newark, said Tim Erwin, Newark schools' senior director of human resources.Moving forward, she will be paid $100 per hour for any consultant work Newark officials ask of her."It might be for one hour a month or 10 hours one week -- however the school board and the superintendent see fit," Duran said.
