SAN JACINTO, Pangasinan, Oct. 15 (PIA) -- To create greater awareness about the programs and benefits of being a member of the Social Security System (SSS), the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), the information arm of the government, is embarking on a nation-wide forum for various sectors of the community.

In Pangasinan, a barangay forum for senior citizens, youth, drivers-operators' association, members of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) and barangay officials was held on September 29 at the San Jose Elementary in Barangay San Jose in this town.

Freddie Lazaro, assistant regional head of PIA-Regiona 1, said the agency has been tapped to be one of the offices to help advocate the importance and benefits of being an SSS member.

"Barangay residents are involved in the forum because they belong to the informal sector that needs a lifeline that they can hold on to in times of disability, sickness, maternity, old age, death and other contingencies resulting in loss of income or financial burden," Lazaro said.

Meanwhile, Team Head Dindo Fernandez of SSS Dagupan Branch briefed the participants on what benefits they could avail if they become SSS members.

After the forum, Fernandez and his team answered all queries and processed registration forms of new SSS applicants. (JNPD/EMBS/PIA-1, Pangasinan)
