China science, technology news summary -- Sept. 28

BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

COVID-19 VACCINE

Two inactivated COVID-19 vaccines developed by the China National Biotec Group are under phase-3 clinical trials in the Middle East, with more than 35,000 people inoculated.

The trials in the Middle East have so far shown good safety and no serious adverse reactions. Up till now, there have been 11 Chinese COVID-19 vaccines entering clinical trials, with four in phase-3 clinical trials.

SATELLITE LAUNCH

China has successfully launched two environmental monitoring satellites from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern Shanxi Province on Sunday.

A Long March-4B rocket carrying the HJ-2A and HJ-2B satellites took off at 11:23 a.m. (Beijing Time). They will replace the HJ-1A and HJ-1B, the previous generation of environmental monitoring satellites, to provide services concerning environmental protection, natural resources, water conservancy, agriculture and forestry.

UN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

China has released the 2020 edition of its report titled "Big Earth Data in Support of the Sustainable Development Goals," presenting the country's exploration and practice of using science and technology innovation to help meet the goals of UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The report, released during the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, covers China's measures in areas such as biodiversity conservation, the sustainable development of Chinese cities and towns, wetlands protection, and coastal ecosystem evaluation. It includes 26 typical cases and proposes 24 sets of data products, 13 models and 19 supporting programs.
